Finding Your Wedding Photography Editing Style

Nov 8, 2019 | Tips & Advice, Weddings | 0 comments

Did you know there are different wedding photography editing styles? The style can be light and airy, or dark and moody, and so many in between. Choosing a wedding photographer is a daunting task, and many don’t pay attention to the editing styles. How do you know which one is right for you as a couple? I want to help you identify the main wedding photography editing styles and also give you some important things to consider when choosing one that’s right for you and your partner.

Please note that even within each of these two major photography editing styles, photographers will adjust certain elements to match their style and brand. As each photographer is unique from the one next door, I’m hoping you can still get a sense of what YOU like and what matters the most to you when you consider these two major photography editing styles.

I will be using the same photos to demonstrate each of these styles.

Style 1: Light, Bright and Airy

  • Clean, natural editing
  • Close to true colors
  • Typically shot with uncluttered background
  • Works great for outdoors as the style uses a lot of soft, natural light

I identify my photography editing style as light and airy, but the brightness is toned down a bit. I also like to keep the colors as true as possible, sometimes enhancing the natural colors, and I love that people have described my style as “organic, natural, and light”.

Style 2: Dark and Moody

  • Has a “dark” (sometimes brown/orange) tint to the photos, may not be great for some skin tones
  • Works great for indoors
  • Great contrast between the highlights and shadows
  • Warm and moody, cinematic feel

As you can see, this is only really a starting point when it comes to defining my style and finding your style. One of the tips I got when I first started out is to create a mood board on Pinterest and add all the photos I liked to the board. You will quickly realize once your board is filled what style best represent and fit you.

It has been incredibly useful and humbling for me to be challenged with photo editing after each session and wedding. I love working with colors, and I hope you do, too!
