What to Wear for Family Portraits

The Ultimate Guide to What to Wear for Your Family Portrait Session

As an Orange County family portrait photographer, I’ve learned that family portraits are so much more than simple photographs, they’re timeless memories frozen in a single frame. Every session tells a story about connection, laughter, and love. And while the experience itself should feel effortless, one of the most common questions I often get asked is, “What should we wear?” or “Do you have examples of what we should wear?”

Choosing outfits for your family portrait session can feel a little daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. The clothing you select will set the tone for your photos and highlight your family’s unique personality. From soft, neutral tones that create a classic, timeless look to bold colors that express energy and warmth, every choice matters.

As your family portrait photographer, my goal is to help you create beautiful, cohesive images that feel like you. Start by selecting a color palette that complements your home décor. These photos may very likely end up on your walls, so you want to choose pieces that coordinate without matching too perfectly. Think textures, layers, and accessories that show personality while keeping the overall look harmonious.

Whether you prefer a relaxed, lifestyle feel or a more refined and polished look, the key is comfort and confidence. When you feel good, it always shows in your photos.

So, say goodbye to wardrobe stress and hello to stunning, heartfelt images that you’ll be proud to display for years to come. Your family deserves photos that make your house feel like home and as your family photographer, I’m here to make it happen!

Coordinating versus Matching

You’ve probably seen the classic family photo where everyone’s in jeans and a white shirt, and while that look had its moment, it’s not the best choice anymore. As a family portrait photographer, I always recommend coordinating your outfits rather than matching them exactly.

First, start with a color palette instead of identical outfits. Choose tones that complement each other and reflect your family’s personality. Here are some examples:

  • Earth tones: olive, rust, tan, mustard
  • Neutrals: gray, cream, soft denim, beige
  • Warm tones: taupe, blush, burgundy
  • Cool tones: soft blue, white, navy

If you are going to wear patterns, keep them simple. Thin stripes or subtle textures work best. Avoid anything too bold or “busy,” which can distract from your faces. Layers like jackets, scarves, or sweaters add depth and interest, especially when they stay within your chosen color palette.

Dress for the Location

Consider where your photo locations will take place and your outfits should feel natural in that setting. Here are some examples to help guide you.

  • For outdoor sessions like trails or open fields or parks: Go relaxed and organic. Think breathable fabrics and earthy colors that complement nature.
  • For indoor or studio sessions: I recommend a slightly dressier look but you should still be comfortable, just more polished.
  • For formal venues: Step it up! Dress shoes, pressed outfits, and a cohesive color story elevate the look beautifully.

Outfit Ideas by Group

  • For Women: Flowy dresses or skirts, blouses with jeans or tailored pants, neutral flats or boots, and subtle jewelry.
  • Men: Button-down shirts, polos, or light sweaters; jeans or chinos; neutral shoes or boots.
  • Kids: Comfortable and simple pieces. Please avoid cartoon graphics, bright logos, or scratchy fabrics. Tip: You can bring a backup outfit just in case!

Clothing to Avoid

PLEASE skip the neon colors, oversized logos, and ultra-trendy pieces that might date your photos. The goal is timeless outfits that still look beautiful years from now.

What to Wear in Family Photos to Look Thinner

A question I sometimes get as a family portrait photographer is: “What should we wear in family photos to look thinner?” Feeling confident in front of the camera starts with smart outfit choices, ones that fit well, flatter your body, and photograph beautifully. So here are some of my tips to help you look and feel your best during your family portrait session:

  1. Choose Dark, Solid Colors
Dark, solid tones are naturally slimming because they minimize visual distractions. Think navy, charcoal, deep green, or burgundy for the hoildays! They create clean lines and a polished look.
  2. Go Monochromatic
Wearing one color or similar tones from head to toe can make you appear taller and leaner. It also keeps the focus on your faces instead of your outfits.
  3. Pick the Right Fit
Tailored clothing always photographs better than oversized or clingy styles. You can look for pieces that skim your body, but that are not too loose and not too tight.
  4. Choose Flattering Necklines
V-necks and scoop necks are great choices because they elongate your neckline and create vertical lines. Skip high necklines if you want to slim your face or upper body.
  5. Add Vertical Details
I know I said to avoid patterns, but vertical stripes, seams, or button-down tops draw the eye upward and downward, creating a long, lean look. AVOID wide horizontal stripes or bold prints, which can have the opposite effect.
  6. Try Long, Open Layers
Cardigans, blazers, and jackets (when left open) naturally create vertical lines that visually slim the body.
  7. Wear Mid to High-Rise Pants
High-rise styles define your waist and smooth your torso. Low-rise pants often create unflattering lines, especially when you’re seated or moving.
  8. Go for Matte Fabrics
Shiny or clingy materials reflect light and emphasize curves, while matte fabrics absorb light, thus giving a smoother, more flattering look.
  9. Define Your Waistline
Adding a belt or choosing clothing that naturally tapers at the waist will enhance your shape and add structure.
  10. Practice Confident Posing
During your session, stand tall, relax your shoulders, and avoid slouching or crossing your arms. Your posture does make a huge difference in how you appear on camera.

Final Styling Tips for Families

Before your session day, lay out everyone’s outfits together to check how the colors and tones coordinate. This small step can save stress later and help you visualize the overall look.

  • Also, please do a quick hair and makeup test if you plan to get ready professionally.
  • Bring backup outfits for the younger kids, spills and surprises can happen!
  • Stick to a cohesive color palette instead of all black or all white. Mix tones and textures for dimension.
  • Avoid trendy pieces, neon colors, and bold logos.
  • A QUICK NOTE ON GLASSES: If anyone wears glasses, consider bringing frames without lenses or taking a few photos without them. Lenses can distort facial features or create glare in photos.

My Final Thoughts

The best outfit is one that feels comfortable and true to your personal style. When you feel confident and at ease, it always shows in your photos.
