Why Choose an Orange County Courthouse Wedding?

An Orange County courthouse wedding is one of the most romantic and stress-free ways to say “I do.” Instead of worrying about a large guest list or a big production, it’s simply about the two of you, your love, and the commitment you’re making. Many couples are surprised by how meaningful and intimate a courthouse wedding in Orange County can be, often feeling even more personal than a traditional ceremony.

While it’s simple, a courthouse wedding does require a little bit of planning. From securing your marriage license to scheduling your ceremony time, there are a few important steps to know. That’s why I created this guide to walk you through everything so your day is as smooth and joyful as possible.

As an Orange County courthouse wedding photographer, I adore capturing these small but powerful love stories. Whether you’re marrying at the Laguna Hills Civic Center or the historic Old Orange County Courthouse in Santa Ana, I’ll help you document the joy, nerves, and laughter of this once-in-a-lifetime moment. Your courthouse wedding is about you, your connection, and the life you’re beginning together. And I’d be honored to be there to capture it. I want you to maximize your time with me during your wedding, so I’ve compiled this guide on how to get married at any Orange County courthouse.

Where Do Orange County Courthouse Weddings Take Place?

Orange County courthouse weddings can take place at several Clerk-Recorder locations throughout the county. Each offers civil ceremonies by appointment, and you can choose whichever is most convenient for you:

Couples often choose their Orange County courthouse wedding location based on convenience, availability, or the aesthetic of the building for photos. For example, the Old Orange County Courthouse is a historic landmark with beautiful architecture, while the Laguna Hills Civic Center offers a modern, clean backdrop.

How to Get Married at an Orange County Courthouse: Step by Step

Step 1: Apply for a Marriage License

Before your Orange County courthouse wedding, you’ll need a valid California marriage license. Couples can apply online through the Orange County Clerk-Recorder’s Office and then appear in person to pick it up. Don’t forget that both partners must be present with valid photo IDs.

Step 2: Book Your Ceremony Appointment

Once you have your marriage license, you’ll need to schedule a civil ceremony. Orange County courthouses (like Laguna Hills, Santa Ana, Anaheim, and Fullerton) perform ceremonies during regular business hours, but spots fill quickly. Be sure to reserve your date as soon as possible.

For a Laguna Hills Civic Center courthouse wedding, appointments can be made through the Orange County Clerk-Recorder’s Office up to 90 days in advance. I always recommend booking your ceremony as soon as possible to secure your preferred date and time. You can schedule your appointment at the same time you pick up your marriage license, or by calling the Clerk-Recorder’s office directly at (714) 834-2500.

From a photography perspective, the best times for your Laguna Hills courthouse wedding ceremony are either in the morning (for soft, even light) or later in the afternoon (closer to golden hour). The timing may vary depending on the season, so it’s always a good idea to coordinate with your photographer. We’ll guide you on the ideal time for beautiful photos while navigating the courthouse schedule.

Even if you end up with a less-than-ideal time slot, don’t worry! With the right angles, locations around the Civic Center, and a little creativity, you’ll still get stunning, timeless wedding photos to remember your day.

Step 3: Decide on Guests & Witnesses

Most Orange County courthouse weddings are designed for small groups, usually allowing about 10–20 guests. You’ll need at least one witness for the ceremony (and if you’re short, I’m always happy to sign as your witness too!).

Step 4: Hire an Orange County Courthouse Wedding Photographer

As a wedding photographer, I’m naturally biased, but I believe this moment should be captured by a professional.

Step 5: Order Bouquets / Boutonnieres

Every bride needs a bouquet! Your bridal look won’t be your bridal look without it. This is a seemingly small detail that will really elevate your overall look.

Step 6: Scout Photo Locations Nearby

The Laguna Hills Civic Center is minutes from beautiful parks, trails, and beaches. Couples often take portraits at Laguna Beach, Noguchi Garden, or Aliso Viejo trails right after their courthouse ceremony.

Step 7: Plan a Celebration Afterwards

Many couples pair their Orange County courthouse wedding with a private dinner, beach picnic, or party with friends and family later in the evening. It’s the perfect way to extend the celebration beyond the ceremony.

Orange County Courthouse Wedding FAQs

Where should we park?
Parking is fairly easy at most Orange County courthouses, especially at the Laguna Hills Civic Center and Anaheim Hills locations, where there are designated lots. At the Old Orange County Courthouse in Santa Ana, you’ll likely find metered street parking or nearby public lots, so I recommend arriving at least 30 minutes early to allow time for parking, walking in, and checking in.

What should we expect at the ceremony?
A courthouse wedding in Orange County is short, sweet, and meaningful. You’ll check in, wait until your names are called, and then step into a private or semi-private space with a Deputy Commissioner of Civil Marriages. You’ll exchange vows, rings if you choose, and sign your marriage license. After you’re pronounced married, you’ll usually have a chance to take a few photos with your marriage certificate and any guests who joined you. The whole ceremony typically lasts about 10 minutes.

Can you recommend an Orange County florist?
Absolutely! There are many wonderful Orange County florists I can recommend to create beautiful bouquets for your courthouse weddings.

Can you recommend a hair and makeup artist in Orange County?
Yes! Having professional hair and makeup done can make you feel confident and camera-ready for your Laguna Hills courthouse wedding. There are several OC hair and makeup artists I can recommend for your Orange County courthouse wedding

How much photography coverage should we book for an Orange County courthouse wedding?
Most couples book 2–3 hours of coverage for their Orange County courthouse wedding. This usually allows time to capture your ceremony, candid moments with guests, and a portrait session nearby. If you’d like photos of your celebration afterwards, like a dinner or champagne toast, we can always add more time.
